Column Installation for Direct Analysis
Preparation¶
First, set the instrument to a state in which it can be serviced (Maintenance Mode).
- Enter maintenance mode using the workstation.
- Enter maintenance mode using the instrument monitor.
- Enter maintenance mode using the maintenance button on the instrument.
When using graphite ferrule, refer to
"Replacement of Adapter"
to replace the adapter.
When using graphite ferrule, confirm that nipple ④ is used. When using Graphite Vespel ferrule, confirm that nipple ⑦ is used.
The video demonstrates the installation method using a Graphite ferrule, but a Graphite Vespel Ferrule can also be used. Installation is easier with a Graphite ferrule.

Procedures¶
Step 1¶
Make sure that the liner for Direct analysis (⑪) is installed in the injection port.
Set the MMI temperature so that it does not exceed the maximum operating temperature of the column.
Step 2¶
- For Direct analysis, it is recommended to use a column with an inner diameter of 0.32 mm or more.
If you use a capillary column with an inner diameter of less than 0.32 mm, attach the graphite ferrule using the following method:
- Cut a capillary tube (①) into 50 cm to 1 m long.
- Connect the capillary tube (①) and the column with a Press-Tight connector (⑩).
- Pass the graphite ferrule through the capillary tube (①).
-
Cut the end of the capillary tube and the column vertically with capillary cutter, etc. in advance.
-
When connecting the capillary tube and the column with Press-Tight connector, application of a small amount of organic solvent (acetone, hexane, etc.) to the column end will help to seal connected part of Press-Tight connector.
Pass the nut (without slit) (②) and graphite ferrule (③) through the capillary column on the injection port.
After passing the nut (without slit) through the column, use a 6×8 spanner (⑧) to fix the graphite ferrule just enough to prevent it from falling out.
When performing Direct analysis with MMI, the insertion length is around 35 mm to 40 mm.
Step 3¶
Pull the column oven door latch toward you to open the column oven door.
Step 4¶
Insert the capillary column with the nut and ferrule through the injection inlet.
Step 5¶
Insert it until the column upper end hits the liner, and while holding the column to prevent it from shifting, fix the nut (without slit) (②) with a 6×8 spanner (⑧).
When the column touches the liner, the contact between the column tip and the liner is connected as shown below.
Step 6¶
Hang the column on the column hanger.
Step 7¶
Fix the graphite ferrule (③) temporarily also on the column detector side, and install the column.
(Refer to
Installation of Capillary Column (Graphite Ferrule)
)
Step 8¶
Close the column oven door.
Step 9¶
Follow the procedure below according to the relevant instrument to exit maintenance mode.
