GC-2050: Installation of Glass Column

Video (GC-2050: Installation of Glass Column)

Note
  • Following the procedure below, you can install the components required for glass-packed analysis.

  • Please confirm that the SINJ unit is installed at the P5 position beforehand.

  • You cannot change the SINJ unit position by yourself. If the instrument currently in use has the SINJ unit installed at the P6 position and you wish to use glass-packed columns, contact your Shimadzu sales/service representative.

Procedures

Step 1

Stop the instrument. Then, on the workstation, check that the temperature of the column oven is lower than 40 °C, check that the temperatures of the injection port and detector are 50 °C or lower, and check that the gas supply is stopped and there is no residual pressure.

Step 2

Pull the column oven door latch toward you to open the column oven door.

Step 3

Install the column adapter holder (⑦) to screw holes ①② located on the inner ceiling of the column oven, using 2 screws (P3 M4×8).

Note

The SINJ must be installed at the P5 position when using glass-packed columns.

Step 4

Install each adapter to the column adapter holder mounted onto the inner ceiling, using 1 screw (P3 M3×20).

Step 5

When using an ECD/FPD detector, connect the detector and adapter with the metal capillary column (⑨).

Note
  • Make sure that no graphite ferrule fragments enter the metal capillary.

  • If the metal capillary column and/or the adapters are installed, do not heat the oven to 400 °C or higher without gas flow.

  1. Insert the end of the metal capillary column fitted with a graphite ferrule (⑫) into the detector, and tighten with a slitted nut (⑪). Follow the table below for positions to install the graphite ferrule.

    Insert destination
    fixed position
    Adapter side
    5mm
    FPD
    82mm
    ECD
    32mm
Hint

The Graphite jig (for detector) can also be used to secure the detector-side graphite ferrule. When using the jig, adjust the position by aligning the capillary tip with the end of the jig, instead of cutting the metal capillary.

  1. Install the metal capillary column (⑨) onto the adapter (⑧) using the cap nut (small) (⑩) and graphite ferrule (⑫). Fix the graphite ferrule at 5 mm from the column end.
Note

Be sure to perform this work before installing the glass-packed column. If this work is performed with the glass-packed column installed, the column may be damaged.

Step 6

Attach the connection parts to the glass column.

Hint

To prevent column damage during installation due to impact from a nut falling, it is recommended to attach either O-ring for insert (227-35005-01) or Column gasket, silicone (201-35184) .

Use O-ring 4C P4, silicone rubber (⑤), and insert the items below into both ends of the glass column in the following order:

O-ring (for glass insert) (recommended), cap nut, washer, spring, back ring, silicone O-ring

Note

Make sure to insert the back ring (★) so that its flanged side faces the silicone O-ring.

Use graphite ferrule (⑥), and insert the items below into both ends of the glass column in the following order:

O-ring (for glass insert) (recommended), cap nut, washer, spring, back ring, graphite ferrule

Note

Make sure to insert the back ring (★) so that its non-flanged side faces the graphite ferrule.

Step 7

When using a graphite ferrule, tighten it with the graphite fixing jig (⑬) by hand, then use the 10×12 spanner (①) to fasten the graphite ferrule until moderately tightened. Once fastened, remove the graphite fixing jig. To fasten ferrules, position the INJ-side ferrule 40 mm from the glass column end and the adapter-side ferrule 13 mm from the glass column end. Use the same positions for when using the silicone O-rings.

Note

Tightening too strongly may break the glass-packed column.

Step 8

Insert the SINJ insert (③) halfway into the injection inlet.

Step 9

Insert the SINJ insert (③) into the glass column.

Note
  • When installing a glass column on the GC-2050, use the 72 mm Glass insert for SINJ-U packed column (222-30935) of the 2 types of inserts provided. The other 93 mm insert is used to attach the SUS column to the GC-2050.

  • When removing the glass column, the glass insert will come down with the column. Remove the column carefully to prevent the glass insert from falling.

Step 10

Insert the glass column into both the injector side and the adapter (⑧), then hand-tighten the cap nuts.

Note

When inserting the glass insert, if you tighten the cap nut with the injection port septum nut (★) overtightened, the glass insert (③) or glass column may be damaged. Follow the procedure in Replacement of Septum , and be careful not to overtighten the septum nut during maintenance.

Step 11

While gently holding the glass column, tighten the cap nuts on both the injection port side and adapter side, using the spanner (①).

Note

When using O-ring 4C P4 silicone rubber (⑤), gently tighten it to secure. When using graphite ferrule (⑥), tighten it about 1/3 to 1/2 turn to secure.

Step 12

Close the column oven door.

Step 13

Start the GC.

Hint
  • For packed columns, the inlet pressure required to maintain the set flow rate significantly varies, depending on the length and mesh size of the column. When using a longer column or a column with finer mesh than your current one, increase the cylinder pressure accordingly.

  • The pressure increase due to the adapter (for FID/STCD, ECD/FPD) is approximately 0 to several kPa. If you use a method with an inlet pressure close to the cylinder pressure, increase the cylinder pressure before use.
