Note

Only aluminum caps can be removed with a decapper.
Since heat-resistant caps and magnetic caps are iron caps, they cannot be removed with a decapper.

Procedures

This procedure describes how to use a decapper to remove a crimped aluminum cap.

Step 1

Remove the vial cap after the vial has cooled to the touch.
Depending on the sample type, it may be necessary to remove the vial cap in a fume hood.

Step 2

Grasp the vial cap with the decapper, and crush the vial cap to remove it. An example of a manual decapper is shown below.
